World Language Curriculum “I Can” Statements

The World Language curriculum “I Can” statements reflect what students should be able to do at every stage of language study, beginning with simple words and phrases at the novice level and progressing to complex conversations and presentations at the advanced level. Statements are organized according to the three major proficiency levels, which are novice, intermediate, and advanced, and are further organized by the interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes. Each mode corresponds to one of the first three World Language Essential Standards. Standard four is embedded throughout all of the modes of communication. The four World Language Essential Standards are as follows:

  1. Use the language to engage in interpersonal communication
  2. Understand words and concepts presented in the language.
  3. Use the language to present information to an audience.
  4. Compare the students’culture and the target culture.
