Middle School Overview

The World Language course of study at the middle school level begins with exploratory programs in French, Latin, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese. Not all languages are currently offered at all schools, but Spanish is predominant throughout. Anne Chesnutt Middle School, in addition to offering courses in Spanish and Mandarin Chinese, offers Spanish Immersion and Spanish for Native Speakers. Spanish Immersion is also offered at New Century International Middle School.

Exploratory programs begin in grade 6, Exploratory I, and continue to grade 7, Exploratory II. Sequential World Language programs begin in grade 7 and continue through high school. Part I is taught in grade 7, and Part II is taught in grade 8. Also taught in grade 8 are more rigorous, advanced courses that allow participants to qualify for high school credit upon completion.

The middle school course of study sequence into high school currently contains five pathways, as outlined below. For a more in-depth description of courses taught on the secondary level, click on the links to the right of this page.

Pathway #1
Students who do not wish to start the high school sequence, but would like to explore a language class in middle school, should follow one of the sequences below:

Sixth Grade:
Exploratory

Seventh Grade:
World Language Intgegrated course – semester or year-long (will emphasize social studies, science, and arts in Spanish or Mandarin Chinese)

Eighth Grade:
NONE

Ninth Grade:
Level I (requires a proficiency end-of-course exam)


Pathway #2
Students with no previous language experience at the elementary level, but would like to start the World Language Studies at the middle school level, should follow one of the sequences below:

Sixth Grade:

World Language Integrated Course – semester or year
(will emphasize social studies, science, and arts in Spanish or  Mandarin Chinese)
Part I –Year-Long Course (Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French, Latin, Spanish)

Seventh Grade:
World Language Integrated Course – semester or year
(will emphasize social studies, science, and arts in Spanish or  Mandarin Chinese)
Part I –Year-Long Course (Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French, Latin, Spanish)

Eighth Grade:
Level I – HS (requires 150 hours minimum seat time and a proficiency
end-of-course exam to earn HS credit)
Part II – Year-Long Course (requires a proficiency end-of-course exam to earn HS credit) 

Ninth Grade:
Level II (requires a proficiency end-of-course exam) 
Level II(requires a proficiency end-of-course exam)  


Pathway #3
Students with previous language experience at the elementary level (FLES program) should follow one of the sequences below:

Sixth Grade:
World Language Integrated Course – semester or year
(will emphasize social studies, science, and arts in Spanish or  Mandarin Chinese)
Seventh Grade:
Part I – Year-Long Course (Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French, Latin, Spanish) requires a proficiency end-of-course exam to earn HS credit

Eighth Grade:
Part II – Year-Long Course (requires a proficiency end-of-course exam to earn HS credit)
Ninth Grade:
Level II
(requires a proficiency end-of-course exam)


Pathway #4
Students with previous language experience in Spanish (Spanish Heritage/Native Speakers, Immersion Program, Dual Immersion Program) should follow one of the sequences below:        
Sixth Grade:

Part I – Spanish for Native Speakers I :
Year-Long Course (requires a proficiency end-of-course exam to earn HS credit)

Social Studies:
Year-Long Course in Spanish

Seventh Grade:

Part II – Spanish for Native Speakers I :
Year-Long Course (requires a proficiency end-of-course exam to earn HS credit)

Social Studies:
Year-Long Course in Spanish

Eighth Grade:

Spanish for Native
Speakers  II
 :
Year-Long Course (requires a proficiency end-of-course exam to earn HS credit)

Social Studies:
Year-Long Course in Spanish

Ninth Grade:
Spanish IV Honors or Pre-AP – Language and Culture :(requires a proficiency end-of-course exam)


Pathway #5
Students with previous language experience (Immersion Program) should follow one of the sequences below:

Sixth Grade:
Spanish as Language Arts, Part I – Year-Long Course (requires a proficiency
end-of-course exam) 
Seventh Grade:
Spanish as Language Arts, Part II– Year-Long (requires a proficiency
end-of-course exam) 
Eighth Grade:
Spanish II – Year-Long Course (requires a proficiency end-of-course exam) 
Ninth Grade:
Spanish III Honors (requires a proficiency end-of-course exam)
